Nourishing the North Shore

Commitment to advancing healthy aging:

When formulating our programming, elders in our community became on the of the target groups . Due to issues of transportation, physical mobility, income and specific health needs, it became imperative for us to consider barriers to healthy food access in light of the specific needs and challenges of elders in our community. Through our VegOut mobile markets with stops at elderly housing, cooking and nutrition classes for seniors and adaptation of garden beds we ensure that elders have access to healthy local food. In addition, we have a mission to create community across different segments of our community that are often segregated. Elders are one such population. All our community programs and events are accessible, offered with a sliding fee scale and inclusive of all our members. Through our collaborations with local Councils on Aging, Housing Authorities, Public Health Departments, YWCA and Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley, we are able to engage seniors in planning as well as encourage their participation in community events, input into the choice and delivery of healthy food as well as ensure the reduction of barriers to that access.
