AARP Creates Disaster Resilience Toolkit to Support Older Adults in Emergency Preparedness

Jul 19, 2022

Noting the aging population and a growing body of evidence revealing that older adults are disproportionately impacted during disasters, AARP released a Disaster Resilience Tool Kit.

The resource has been created for local leaders, government staff, aging services professionals and community volunteers, but is also important for age- and dementia friendly leaders and stakeholders. It is a companion title to the Guide to Expanding Mitigation: Making the Connection to Older Adults, published by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as a resource for emergency management professionals.

The AARP Disaster Resilience Tool Kit examines the realities faced by older residents when a disaster strikes, and it presents strategies that can be used during all stages of the “disaster life cycle” (see page 6) to ensure that an all-ages lens is effectively integrated into preparedness, response, recovery and mitigation efforts.
