AARP Livable Communities launched a video that highlights age-friendly community efforts that strengthen food security. Among the nationwide examples is Rockport, Mass. where restaurants and a high school-based culinary program provide meals to older residents throughout the year.
Other examples and practices include the following age-friendly community programs:
- Baltimore County, Maryland, hosts an annual “No Senior Eats Alone Day” to help combat loneliness and hunger
- Auburn, Maine, residents of all ages benefitted from a large-scale potato giveway from a local grower
- Greendale, Wisconsin, fosters a partnership that connects children and older adults through a community garden
- Renton, Washington, supports a daily lunch program and free grocery distributions
- Allegany County, New York, is working to reduce barriers to food assistance programs and expand access through local markets and food delivery services
- Dexter, Maine, distributed raised garden beds, soil and plants to older residents
- Miami Gardens, Florida, has embedded healthy food access and active living strategies into its comprehensive master plan
- Arlington, Virginia, has pop-up farmers’ market events that bring healthy foods to near where people live
- Caribou, Maine, has a community garden that provides fresh produce to two older adult communities and a nursing home
