AARP Releases Updated Results and Resources from 2024 Home & Community Preferences Survey

Apr 16, 2025

Adults 50-plus share a common thread: they continue to be steadfast in their desire to live independently in their homes and communities throughout their lifetime, according to new findings released as part of AARP’s Home & Community Preferences Survey.

To help illuminate the data previously released, AARP assembled “Building for the Future,” which is a data story explaining the trends and findings from the survey.

The data story examines a range of factors from community-based to medical on how older adults see needs being met in order to enable aging in a preferred setting. This includes home modifications and alternative housing options like co-housing, accessory dwelling units and affordable housing.

This data can help communities working to become more age- and dementia friendly create plans, engage residents and tell a more complete story about preferences of older adults.
