Accessing Age-Friendly Parks, Trails and Community Walks During COVID-19

Apr 1, 2020

Older adults – and people of all ages – looking to remain active and get outside during the COVID-19 pandemic have resources to find accessible parks, trails and community walks, along with reminders of social distancing.

MHAC recognizes the physical and mental benefits of getting outside and remaining active. As such, we invite age- and dementia friendly communities to promote parks and trails – preferably with paved or natural surface pathways in their communities – via the statewide accessible trail directory and the DCR Park directory (click “wheelchair accessible” before you search).

MHAC’s partners at WalkBoston have also created an extensive list of maps featuring community walks all across the state, which may be useful to those unable to get to parks and trails.

In addition to guidance on safe social distancing guidance from the CDC and Massachusetts Department of Public Health, the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) created this helpful PDF specific to parks.

The Metropolitan Area Planning Council has also created an interactive map of trails in their region here.
