Age-Friendly Funding Opportunity: MassDOT Support Opportunity for Regional Transit Authorities

Nov 9, 2018

MassDOT has announced it is now accepting applications from Regional Transit Authorities (RTA) for additional funding in Fiscal Year 2019, totaling $4 million, to implement best practices and innovative services to benefit customers.

This selection process will consider factors such as whether RTA projects will increase ridership, demonstrate innovation, serve a priority population, be financially sustainable, have complete business plans, present measurable milestones, and provide cost savings or operational efficiencies.

The total of $4 million in additional funding was allocated in the Fiscal Year 2019 state budget signed by Governor Baker. There is no set number of awards or funding amounts and awards will be chosen on merit based and weighted selection criteria.

All project proposals will be selected on a competitive basis. MassDOT has proactively contacted RTAs regarding this additional funding and applications should be submitted by November 30, 2018.

Award recipients will then be announced in the following weeks. Successful applicants will be required to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with MassDOT to address the project goals.

The most recent state budget also included the creation of a Task Force which is currently evaluating how RTAs can provide service more effectively. This Task Force will make recommendations and propose guidelines for establishing standards, financial performance indicators, and best practices among the RTAs throughout the Commonwealth.
