New data goes beyond the topline statistics often used to characterize those served by MassHealth in order to paint a fuller, more meaningful picture of the more than one in four Massachusetts residents enrolled in the program. Released by Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation of Massachusetts, “Faces of MassHealth: Coverage Across the Commonwealth” includes key demographic characteristics of people enrolled in MassHealth and documents the personal experiences that brought individuals to MassHealth and how the program has benefited their lives and families.
MassHealth serves as a critical bridge for the 15% of members aged 50-64 who may not yet be eligible for Medicare based on age. MassHealth coverage ensures many low-income individuals have access to comprehensive health care services in advance of potential transitions to Medicare coverage at age 65.
More than half of MassHealth members (nearly 60%) are either children under age 19, adults aged 65 or older, or people with disabilities, according to the key findings. Additionally, women account for more than half of all adults and nearly two-thirds of adults aged 65 or older with MassHealth coverage.
Nearly 90% of adults aged 65 or older enrolled in MassHealth are also enrolled in Medicare. Approximately 25% of Medicare beneficiaries statewide also have MassHealth coverage.
