More than 104,000 people aged 55-64 and 42,150 people over 64 were counted as homeless and nearly half were unsheltered, according to analysis of the Bipartisan Policy Center of 2024 data from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
HUD released its most recent Point-in-Time (PIT) count that revealed homelessness in the United States reached an all-time high last year.
Many older adults are experiencing homelessness for the first time, according to the report, which is driven by fixed incomes, rising rents, and the lack of age-appropriate affordable housing. Older adults experiencing homelessness also face greater health risks due to limited financial resources and inadequate access to care.
